Der Vater mit dem Kind

Language: German (Deutsch)

Dem Vater liegt das Kind im Arm,
Es ruht so wohl, es ruht so warm,
Es lächelt süß: "Lieb Vater mein!"
Und mit dem Lächeln schläft es ein.

Der Vater beugt sich, athmet kaum,
Und lauscht auf seines Kindes Traum;
Er denkt an die entschwund'ne Zeit
Mit [wehmuthsvoller]1 [Zärtlichkeit]2.

Und eine Thrän' aus Herzensgrund
Fällt ihm auf seines Kindes Mund;
Schnell küßt er ihm die Thräne ab,
Und wiegt es leise auf und ab.

Um einer ganzen Welt Gewinn
Gäb' er das Herzenskind nicht hin; --
Du Seliger schon in der Welt,
Der so sein Glück in Armen hält!

De vader met het kind

Language: Dutch (Nederlands) after the German (Deutsch)

Het kind ligt in zijn vaders arm,
Het rust zo goed, het rust zo warm,
Het glimlacht zoet: mijn vader lief!
Terwijl het glimlacht slaapt het diep.

De vader buigt, houdt d' adem stil,
Beluistert de dromende kinderziel;
Hij denkt aan de voorbije tijd
Met blijdschap en weemoedigheid.

En och, een traan die 'n uitweg vond
Valt bij zijn kindje op de mond;
Vlug kust hij weg het traantje teer
En wiegt het kind zacht op en neer.

Zelfs als hij heel de wereld wint,
Gaf hij niet weg dit dierbaar kind.
Gelukkig reeds op aard' wie leeft
En zo zijn schat in handen heeft!
