Im Spätherbst
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Die Nebel fliehn und wogen
Und halten rings umzogen
Des Himmels blauen Plan.
Es stirbt die Fröhlichkeit;
Verstummt sind Berg' und Wälder,
Umschattet Au'n und Felder
Von feuchter Dunkelheit.
So dunkelten die Tage
In Kummer, Furcht und Plage
Dein ganzes Leben hin.
Als dir das Morgenroth
Die fernen Höh'n umkränzte,
Das Glück zuerst Dir glänzte,
Da kam zu dir der Tod.
W. Taubert sets stanza 2

In late autumn
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The mists flee and surge
And they hold fully enshrouded
The blue plain of the heavens.
Merriment dies;
Mountains and forests have fallen mute,
Meadows and fields are shadowed
By damp darkness.
Thus the days grew dark
In sorrow, fear, and toil
Throughout your life.
When the red glow of dawn
Encircled the distant heights for you,
[When] happiness first shone for you,
At that point death came to you.
