Der Schiffer

Language: German (Deutsch)

Friedlich lieg' ich hingegossen,
Lenke hin und her das Ruder,
Athme kühl im Licht des Mondes,
Träume süß im stillen Muthe;
Gleiten lass' ich auch den Kahn,
Schaue in die blanken Fluthen,
Wo die Sterne lieblich schimmern,
Spiele wieder mit dem Ruder.

Säße doch das blonde Mägdlein
Vor mir auf dem Bänkchen ruhend,
Sänge schmachtend zarte Lieder.
Himmlisch wär' mir dann zu Muthe.
Ließ mich necken von dem Kinde,
Wieder tändelnd mit der Guten. -
Friedlich lieg' ich hingegossen,
Träume süß im stillen Muthe,
Athme kühl im Licht des Mondes,
Führe hin und her das Ruder.

Note: Schlegel, in the 1809 and 1816 editions, did not divide the poem into two stanzas.

De schipper

Language: Dutch (Nederlands) after the German (Deutsch)

Vredig leun ik achterover,
Duw wat heen en weer de roerarm,
Adem koel in 't zachte maanlicht,
Mijmer zoet, ben stil te moede;
Glijden laat ik ook de boot,
Kijk naar 't water langs mij spoelend,
Waar de sterren lief in blinken,
Speel weer verder met de roerstok.

Zat nu maar het blonde meidje
Voor mij, op het bankje toevend,
Zong zij smachtend tere liedjes,
Hemels was 't mij dan te moede.
'k Liet mij plagen door het schatje,
Telkens flirtend met die zoete.
Vredig leun ik achterover,
'k Mijmer zoet, ben stil te moede,
Adem koel in 't zachte maanlicht,
Stoot wat heen en weer de roerarm.
