In der mondlos stillen Nacht
Stand er unter dem Altane,
Sang mit himmlisch süßer Stimme
Minnelieder zur Gitarre.

Dann auch mit den Nebenbuhlern
Hat er tapfer sich geschlagen,
Daß die hellen Funken stoben,
Daß die Mauern widerhallten.

Und so übt' er jeden Dienst,
Den man weihet edeln Damen,
Daß mein Herz in Lieb' erglühte
Für den teuern Unbekannten.

Als ich drauf am frühen Morgen
Bebend blickte vom Altane:
Blieb mir nichts von ihm zu schauen,
Als sein Blut, für mich gelassen.
