You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Am Fenster

Language: German (Deutsch)

Ihr lieben Mauern, [sanft]1 und traut,
Die ihr mich kühl umschließt,
Und [silberglänzig]2 niederschaut,
[Wann]3 droben Vollmond ist:
Ihr saht mich einst so traurig da,
Mein Haupt auf schlaffer Hand, -
Als ich in mir allein mich sah,
Und [keiner]4 mich verstand.

Jetzt brach ein [ander]5 Licht heran:
Die Trauerzeit ist um:
Und manche ziehn mit mir die Bahn
Durch's Lebensheiligthum.
Sie raubt der Zufall ewig nie
Aus meinem treuen Sinn:
In tiefster Seele trag' ich sie, -
Da reicht kein Zufall hin.

Du Mauer wähnst mich trüb' wie einst
Das ist die stille Freud';
Wenn du vom Mondlicht wiederscheinst,
Wird mir die Brust so weit.
An jedem Fenster wähn' ich dann
Ein Freundeshaupt, gesenkt,
Das auch so schaut zum Himmel an,
[Und]6 auch so meiner denkt!

Alla finestra

Language: Italian (Italiano) after the German (Deutsch)

Voi cari muri amici e familiari,
che mi circondate con la vostra frescura,
e mi osservate con argentei bagliori,
quando in alto è piena la luna!
Una volta mi avete visto triste,
con la testa fra le mani stanche,
quando guardavo in me stesso soltanto,
e nessuno mi stava accanto.
Ora è spuntata una nuova luce,
e il tempo della tristezza è passato,
e molti percorrono con me questa strada
attraverso il santuario della vita.
Il fato non li sottrarrà mai
al mio sentimento fedele,
li porto nel profondo del cuore
là il fato non ha alcun potere.
Voi muri mi pensate ancora triste,
ma la mia è una gioia tranquilla;
quando al chiaro di luna splendete,
allora il mio cuore si gonfia.
Immagino presso ogni finestra,
il cenno di un capo amico,
che poi guarda pure in cielo,
e anche di me si dà pensiero.
