Göttlich ist und ewig der Geist. Ihm entgegen, dessen wir Bild und Werkzeug sind, Führt unser Weg; unsre innerste Sehnsucht ist: Werden wie Er, leuchten in Seinem Licht! Aber [irden und sterblich]1 sind wir geschaffen, Träge lastet auf uns Kreaturen die Schwere. Hold zwar und mütterlich warm umhegt uns Natur, Säugt uns Erde, bettet uns Wiege und Grab; Doch befriedet Natur uns nicht, Ihren Mutterzauber durchstößt Des unsterblichen Geistes Funke Väterlich, macht zum Manne das Kind, Löscht die Unschuld und weckt uns zu Kampf und Gewissen. So zwischen Mutter und Vater, So zwischen Leib und Geist Zögert der Schöpfung gebrechlichstes Kind, Zitternde Seele Mensch, des Leidens fähig Wie kein anderes Wesen, und fähig des Höchsten: Gläubiger, hoffender Liebe. Schwer ist sein Weg, Sünde und Tod seine Speise, Oft verirrt er ins Finstre, oft wär ihm Besser, niemals erschaffen zu sein. Ewig aber strahlt über ihm seine Sehnsucht, Seine Bestimmung: das Licht, der Geist. Und wir fühlen: ihn, den Gefährdeten, Liebt der Ewige mit besonderer Liebe. Diví i etern és l’Esperit. Vers Ell, de qui imatge i instrument som, ens porta el nostre camí, el nostre més íntim anhel és: esdevenir com Ell, resplendir en la Seva llum! Però de fang i mortals vàrem ser creats, inerta, a nosaltres criatures, la pesantor ens afeixuga. Si bé la natura, benigna i amb maternal calidesa, té cura de nosaltres, ens nodreix la terra, ens enllita al bressol i a la tomba; però malgrat això, la natura no ens satisfà, l’espurna de l’Esperit immortal crivella el seu encant maternal, paternalment, fa de l’infant un home, extingeix la innocència i ens estimula per a la lluita i la consciència. Així, entre mare i pare, així, entre cos i esperit vacil•la el més fràgil fill de la creació, l’home amb ànima tremolosa, capaç de sofrir com cap altre ésser, i capaç del més elevat: l’amor fidel i esperançat. Penós és el seu camí, el pecat i la mort el seu nodriment, sovint es perd en la foscúria, sovint fóra millor per a ell de mai haver estat creat. Sempre però, al seu damunt resplendeix el seu anhel, el seu destí: la llum, l’Esperit. I nosaltres ho sentim: ell, l’exposat al perill, és estimat per l’Etern amb un especial amor. Per això, a nosaltres, germandat extraviada, ens és possible encara l’amor en la desavinença, i no el jutjar i odiar, ans l’amor pacient, l’afectuosa tolerància, ens conduiran més a prop de la sagrada destinació.
