September

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

These are to me the last days of this year:
The asters flourish in the borders.
The air is mild, so quiet, so blue, and pure,
And walking round you smell the blooming heather.
There is no sound of singing birds all round,
But in the calmness cicadas are chirping,
And I shall die once when they sing me at night
And clouds of heaven carry me to my God.

From the Grimm score.
