Moderen synger

Language: Norwegian (Bokmål)

Gretchen ligger i kiste
dybt i den sorte muld.
Gav jeg hende en kyse,
foret med røden guld.

Sænked i sorten kiste
Gretchen så skjær og fin.
La' de kolde små hænder
over det hvide lin.

Ene i natten jeg sidder,
Stormene går over hav,
river alle de blomster
fra lille Gretchens grav. --

Äiti laulaa

Language: Finnish (Suomi) after the Norwegian (Bokmål)

Gretchen lepää arkussaan
syvällä mustassa mullassa.
minä olin antanut hänelle myssyn,
jonka vuorissa oli punaista ja kultaa.

Mustassa arkussa haudattiin
Gretchen, joka oli meille niin rakas.
Asettelin hänen pienet kylmät kätösensä
valkoisen pellavan päälle.

Yksin minä istun yössä,
myrsky pauhaa meren yllä
ja repii kaikki kukkaset
pikku Gretchenin haudalta.
