Rodopis
Language: Spanish (Español)
Available translation(s): ENG
Rodopis, ocultemos a los curiosos nuestros besos;
realicemos, lejos de todas las miradas, el amable y peligroso servicio de Cipris.
El amor se complace en el misterio.
Evitemos las ávidas pupilas que nos acechan.
¡Oh, cuán dulce es la miel que se paladea furtivamente!

Rhodopis
Language: English  after the Spanish (Español)
Rhodopis, let us hide our kisses from the onlookers;
far from all the gazes, let us fulfill Cyprus' amiable and dangerous service.
Love takes pleasure in mystery.
Let us avoid the eager eyes which stalk us.
Oh, how sweet is the honey that is savored secretively.
Translator's note for line 1: Rhodopis was a legendary hetaira of 6th-century BCE Greece. In ancient Greece, a hetaira was a type of prostitute who served as an artist, entertainer, and companion in addition to providing sexual services. In contrast to the rule for most Greek women, hetairas were highly educated and allowed access to the symposia which followed Greek feasts.
