Im Frühling, als der Märzwind ging,
als jeder Zweig voll Knospen hing,
da fragten sie mit Zagen:
was wird der Sommer sagen?
Und als das Korn in Fülle stand,
in lauter Sonne briet das Land,
da seufzten sie und schwiegen:
bald wird der Herbstwind fliegen.
Der Herbstwind blies die Bäume an
und ließ auch nicht ein Blatt daran.
Sie sahn sich an: dahinter
kommt nur der böse Winter.
Das war nicht eben falsch gedacht,
der Winter kam auch über Nacht.
Die armen, armen Leute,
was sorgen sie nur heute?
Sie sitzen hinterm Ofen still
und warten, ob's nicht tauen will,
und bangen sich und sorgen
um morgen.

Au printemps, quand le vent de Mars soufflait,
Quand chaque branche pendait couverte de bourgeons
Alors ils demandaient avec hésitations :
Que dira l'été ?
Et quand le blé se tenait en quantité,
Qu'un clair soleil rôtissait le pays,
Alors ils soupiraient et se taisaient :
Bientôt le vent d'automne soufflerait.
Le vent d'automne soufflait dans les arbres
Et ne laissaient pas une feuille sur eux.
Ils se regardaient : là derrière
Arrive maintenant le diabolique hiver.
Ce n'était pas vraiment faux,
L'hiver arrivait aussi pendant la nuit.
Les pauvres, pauvres gens,
Qu'est-ce qui les soucie aujourd'hui ?
Ils sont assis tranquillement derrière le poêle
Et attendent si la rosée tombera ou non,
Ils ont peur et se font du souci
Pour demain.
