Künstlers Abendlied

Language: German (Deutsch)

Ach, daß die innre Schöpfungskraft
Durch meinen Sinn erschölle!
Daß eine Bildung voller Saft
Aus meinen Fingern quölle!

Ich zittre nur, ich stottre nur,
Und kann es doch nicht lassen;
Ich fühl, ich kenne dich, Natur,
Und so muß ich dich fassen.

Bedenk ich dann, wie manches Jahr
Sich schon mein Sinn erschließet,
Wie er, wo dürre Heide war,
Nun Freudenquell genießet;

Wie sehn ich mich, Natur, nach dir,
Dich treu und lieb zu fühlen!
Ein lustger Springbrunn wirst du mir
Aus tausend Röhren spielen.

Wirst alle meine Kräfte mir
In meinem Sinn erheitern
Und dieses enge Dasein hier
Zur Ewigkeit erweitern.

Chanson vespérale de l'artiste

Language: French (Français) after the German (Deutsch)

Ah, que la force créatrice
Puisse retentir dans mon esprit!
Qu'une forme emplie de sève
Jaillisse de mes doigts!

Je ne fais que trembler, que bégayer,
Mais ne puis m'en empêcher;
Je sens que je te connais, Nature,
Il me faut donc te comprendre.

Alors je réalise durant combien d'années
Déjà mon esprit s'est défriché,
Comment, là où il n'était que lande aride,
Il goûte maintenant à une source de joie ;

Comme je me languis de toi, Nature,
J'aspire à te sentir fidèle et chère !
Tu deviendras pour moi une joyeuse fontaine
Jouant de mille tuyaux.

Tu éclaireras toutes les forces
De mon esprit
Et cette existence étriquée que voici,
Tu l'élargiras à l'éternité.
