Es ragen die vier Wände, Als ob sie nur bestimmt, Den kühnen Wuchs zu schirmen, Der zu den Wolken klimmt. A Hirsau, en el runam es bransoleja un om, la capçada d’un verd nou, s’alça damunt el cantell del timpà. S’arrela profundament al sòl d’un antic monestir; a guisa de teulada s’arqueja cap enfora vers el blau del cel. L’estretor dels murs mig enrunats li prengué l’aire i el sol, però també l’empenyé a créixer amunt fins a trobar la llum. Les quatre parets s’eleven com si fossin només destinades a protegir l’agosarada creixença del que s’enfila vers els núvols. Quan allà, a la verda vall, passejava solitari, era a l’om, el sublim, on els meus pensaments es fixaven. Quan parava l’orella al runam, somort i mut, aleshores, el seu vivaç brancatge brunzia al bufar del vent. L’he vist sovint envermellir amb els primers raigs del matí; l’he vist encara il•luminat quan, tot a l’entorn, la vall era ombrívola. Al monestir de Wittenberg creixé també un arbre semblant i, amb les seves branques gegantines, trencà la teulada de les cel•les. Oh raig de llum, tu penetres cap avall a tots els sepulcres.
