Mon œil est brillant à minuit,
Plus brillant que les cloches matinales :
Quand penses-tu à moi pendant le jour ?

Si j'étais un pêcheur, je me lèverais,
Je porterais mon filet à la rivière,
Je porterais joyeusement le poisson au marché.

Dans le moulin, près de la lumière, l'apprenti du meunier
S'agite, tous les engrenages cliquettent ;
Une activité aussi vigoureuse serait vraiment bonne pour moi !

Hélas, pauvre de moi ! pauvre nigaud !
Je dois sur mon lit broyer du noir vainement,
Avec une enfant gâtée et capricieuse dans la tête !
