You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of April 20, we are $4,600 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today and join dozens of other supporters in making this important renovation possible!

Das Mondlicht

Language: German (Deutsch)

Dein gedenkend irr' ich einsam
Diesen Strom entlang;
Könntend lauschen wir gemeinsam
Seinem Wellenklang.

Könnten wir zusammen schauen
In den Mond empor,
Der da drüben aus den Auen
Leise taucht hervor.

Freundlich streut er meinem Blicke
Aus dem Silberschein
Stromhinüber eine Brücke
Bis zum stillen Hain. -

Wo des Stromes frohe Wellen
Durch den Schimmer zieh'n,
Seh' ich, wie hinab die schnellen
Unaufhaltsam fliehn.

Aber wo im schimmerlosen
Dunkel geht die Flut,
Ist sie nur ein dumpfes Tosen,
Das dem Auge ruht. -

Daß doch mein Geschick mir brächte
Einen Blick von dir!
Süßes Mondlicht meiner Nächte,
Mädchen, bist du mir!

Wenn nach dir ich oft vergebens
In die Nacht geseh'n,
Scheint der dunkle Strom des Lebens
Trauernd stillzustehn.

Wenn du über seine Wogen
Strahlest zauberhell,
Seh' ich sie dahingezogen,
Ach! nur allzuschnell.

Le clair de lune

Language: French (Français) after the German (Deutsch)

Pensant à toi, j'erre solitaire
Le long de ce fleuve
Que ne pouvions nous pas ensemble écouter
Le bruit de ses vagues.

Que ne pouvions nous pas ensemble regarder
La lune là-haut,
Qui là, au-dessus des prairies
Émerge doucement.

Douce à mes yeux, elle diffuse
Sa lumière d'argent,
Sur un pont en amont,
Et jusq'au bois silencieux.

Là où les joyeuses vagues du fleuve
Passent dans le scintillement,
Je les vois irrésistiblement
Filer rapidement vers l'aval.

Tu rayonnes magiquement,
Je la vois s'écouler,
Hélas bien trop vite !
