You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Dans son jardin la sultane se baigne

Language: French (Français)

Dans son jardin la sultane se baigne,
Elle a quitté son dernier vêtement ;

Sur l'arc du ciel un nuage accoudé ;
Je vois son sein vermeil comme l'orange
Et son beau corps de perles inondé. »

Ahmed devint blême comme la lune,
Prit son kandjar au manche ciselé,
Et poignarda sa favorite brune...
Quant au nuage, il s'était envolé !

Oblak

Language: Czech (Čeština) after the French (Français)

Sultánka koupá se ve sadech svých,
šat poslední hle s bujných údů padá,
prost hlodu hřebenu ve prstencích
vlas bohatý ji líbá sličná záda.

K ní oknem zírá sultán šedivý
a praví, hladě vousy dlouhé brady:
Na stráži stojí eunuch bedlivý,
kdo mimo mne zří v lázni její vnady?

Já vidím je — div! — k němu zavolá
mrak, jenž v své pouti nad zahradou stane,
zřím prs, který jak oranž plápolá,
i tělo, s něhož v perlách voda kane.

Tu Ahmed vyskočil, jak měsíc zbled,
vzal handžar svůj se zdobnou rukovětí,
svou hnědou favoritku zabil hned —
a oblak — — v dálku nad zahradou letí…
