Einen Jüngling sah ich,
An den Ufern jenes Wassers
Einen schlanken Jüngling sah ich,

An den Ufern jenes Flusses
Sucht nach Rosen auch der Jüngling,
Viele Rosen pflückt er, viele Rosen.
Und mit Lächeln brach die schönste er,
Gab mit Seufzen mir die Rose.

Van de rozenstruik, o moeder,
Van de rozen kom ik.
Aan de oevers ginds, bij 't water
Zag ik rozen staan en knoppen;
Van de rozen kom ik.
Bij de stroom, daarginds aan 't water
Zag ik rozen staan, mooi bloeiend,
Van de rozen kom ik, van de rozen.
Zag ik rozen staan, mooi bloeiend,
Brak al zuchtend mij wat rozen.
 
Bij de rozenstruik, o moeder,
Zag ik ook een jongen,
Aan de oevers ginds, bij 't water
Zag ik ook een slanke jongen,
Zag ik ook een jongen.
Bij de stroom, daarginds aan 't water
Zocht naar rozen ook de jongen,
Heel veel rozen nam hij, heel veel  rozen.
Met een glimlach brak de mooiste hij,
Reikte zuchtend mij de roos aan.
