Spreidt de nacht zijn vleugels uit,
Zie, hoe hij 't in zijn grijzen mantel
En in zijn lievende armen sluit!

De heuvels rijzen in de verte
Omneveld door een zachtblaauw waas,
De blanke maan bloeit tusschen wolken,
Een lelie in een marmren vaas.

Geen stap weerklinkt meer langs de velden,
Geen vogelzang vervult de lucht,
En zelfs, in 't niet meer ruischend loover,
Heeft zich de wind in slaap gezucht.
