Wenn mich die Abendluft umscherzt
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Wenn mich die Abendluft umscherzt,
Nach des Tages schwüler Pein,
Wie leicht ist Wehmuth nicht verschmerzt
Bei der Sterne Silberschein.
Es drängen sich der Bilder viel,
Aus des Herzens tiefem Grund,
Wohl manches ist nur Kinder-Spiel,
Drängt sich verwirrt und bunt.
Was dem Gefühl sich kundgethan,
Bleibt mit meiner Sehnsucht wach,
Führt liebend mich auf irrd'scher sic Bahn
Hallt in der Erinn'rung nach.

When the evening breeze blows jestingly...
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
When the evening breeze blows jestingly about me
After the sultry torment of the day,
How easily is melancholy put aside
Under the silvery light of the stars.
Many images crowd around me
From the depths of my heart;
Many of them are mere child’s play,
Crowding about me confusingly and colourfully.
Whatever was communicated to my feelings,
Remains awake in my longing,
It lovingly leads me upon my earthly path
And echoes forth in memory.
