Støvskyer stiger for hvert et Skridt,
Og Solen paa Ryggen bager --
Jeg holder med mine Tanker Trit
Og passer mine egne Sager.

Hvem andre skulde vel passe dem?
De kan baade tynge og trykke,
Men mødig og støvet jeg naa'r vel frem
Før Solen gaar bort med min Lykke.

Og synker Du Sol i et knitrende Baal
Bag Vestens flammende Høje,
Jeg har vel endnu i Mørket et Maal,
Vil vove derfor min Trøje.

Fordybet i mine Tanker jeg gaar,
Jeg lader mig bage og stege --
I Solen jeg ser et gyldenrødt Haar
Og Kinder saa lysende blege.

Om disse Kinder jeg nynner en Sang
Og digter et Kvad til de Lokker --
Og slider jeg op Koturnen en Gang,
Jeg digter endda paa Sokker.
