Streiche, o friedlicher Abendwind, sacht
über die glühende Stirne.
Locket, ihr duftenden Lieder der Nacht,
leise herauf die Gestirne.
Laßt mir erlösende Träume erstehn,
Antwort singt all meinen Fragen,

At night
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Waft, oh peaceful evening breeze, gently
over my burning brow.
Ye scented songs of the night, quietly
entice the stars to rise.
Let redeeming dreams arise for me,
sing answers to all my questions,
let me understand life and see
if its waves can carry me.
Harken to me, ye stars, and arrest your onward motion,
first assuage my yearning and suffering!
wishes that all but consume me tremble upward:
Is there nothing but parting?
