Daar wandelde op een zomerdag
een neuswijze achter 't land,
daar hij twee kleene meiskes zag,
die speelden in het zand.
 
Zei Neuswijs: 'Maar, wat doet gij daar,
gij, meiskes alle bei?
Wat doet ge daar, gij blond van haar,
gij meiskes, in de Mei?'
 
En 't eene van de meiskes zei:
'Wel heere, zoo ge ziet,
wij zitten hier, wij zitten, bei!
wij zitten en 'n doen niet.'
 
'Maar niet,' zoo zeide Neuswijs mij,
'dat is een ding, gewis,
dat is een dingen, dat ge gij
niet weet, wat dat het is.'
 
'Ik doe,' zei 't ander meiske boos,
- en 't wist wel wat ervan -
'niet is een kouse voeteloos
en zonder been deran.'
