Le soleil, de ses feux, embrase leur visage:
Pensifs, le long des blés, ils suivent le chemin.
La cigale au repos se tait sur leur passage…
Ils marchent, dans leur force, en se donnant la main.
Elle, le doux mystère a gonflé son corsage;
Lui, de son teint hâlé, voit pâlir le carmin;
Ils s’adorent toujours; mais le culte est plus sage…
Hier est déjà loin, voici venir demain!
A travers les bleuets, devant eux, sous le chaume,
S’ébattent, gais tyrans de ce petit royaume,
Deux blonds lutins, jetant à l’écho leur chanson.
Elle rit de leur joie, elle, la douce reine;
Lui, rêveur, il l’admire en sa beauté sereine,
Bénissant Dieu, qui donne à l’amour sa moisson!
