by Eduard Ernst Heinrich Kauffer (1824 - 1874)

Hat denn ein neuer Lenz begonnen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Hat denn ein neuer Lenz begonnen?
Erwacht, was längst das Grab verschlang?
Die Nacht entflieht, die mich umsponnen,
Ich höre fernen Lerchensang.
Schon flammt am Himmel meiner Qual
Empor ein helles Morgenlicht...
O Gott, nur diesen Hoffnungstrahl,
Ich fleh zu dir, verlösche nicht!

Wie der Ertrinkende vertrauend
Den schwachen, dürren Halm erfaßt,
So gönn' ich, diesen Morgen schauend,
Der ungestümen Sehnsucht Rast.
Nach Osten blick' ich tausendmal,
Wie draußen wird in mir es licht...
O Gott nur diesen Hoffnungstrahl,
Ich fleh zu dir, verlösche nicht!

Confirmed with Gedichte von Eduard Kauffer, Leipzig, Theodor Thomas, 1850, pages 33-34.
