Auf die stürm'sche See hinaus 
will es mich jetzt treiben, 
habe nirgend sicher Haus 
wo ich könnte bleiben, 
muss jetzt nach entferntem Land 
meine Schritte kehren. 
Traurig! Wenn der Freundschaft Band 
und Gesang nicht wären;
aber auf des Gottes Spur 
folg ich froh dem Schönen, 
und die heilige Natur 
sprech ich aus in Tönen. 
 
Find' ich gute Menschen wo, 
ach! Da möcht' ich wohnen, 
all mein Leiden könnte so 
mir das Schicksal lohnen, 
wohl hab' ich an manchem Ort 
biedern Sinn gefunden, 
aber ewig mit sich fort 
treiben mich die Stunden. 
Doch ein Trost im Missgeschick
bleibt mir: kehr' ich nie zurück, 
in dem Klang der Lieder 
findet ihr mich wieder.

Het afscheid van de kunstenaar

Naar de woeste zee op reis
Wil het lot mij drijven,
Nergens heb ‘k een veilig thuis
Waar ‘k zou kunnen blijven.
‘k Moet nu naar een heel ver land
Toch mijn schreden keren.
Treurig, moest ik vriendschapsband
En gezang ontberen.
Maar geleid door Gods bestuur
Volg ik blij het schone,
En de heilige natuur
Druk ik uit in tonen.

Waar ik goede mensen vind,
Ach, daar zou ‘k graag wonen,
Dan zou ’t noodlot, doof en blind,
Toch mijn lijden lonen.
Wel was mij in menig oord
Vriend’lijkheid beschoren,
Maar mij drijven met zich voort
[Steeds maar weer de Horen]¹.
Doch mij blijft in ’t ongeluk
Eén troost: als ‘k keer nooit terug,
In de klank van zangen
[Kun je]² mij steeds vangen.
