Sie war so hold, sie war so reizend,
Sie, die gefesselt meinen Sinn;
Doch seit sie zog in weite Ferne,
Ist mein Glück mit ihr auch dahin.

Schweigend nur an ihrem Auge hangen
Mehr wollte ach, mein Herz ja nicht.
War auch kein Hoffen mir geblieben,
So sah ich doch ihr Augenlicht!

Nie wagte ich, dir zu gestehen,
Daß ich dein Bild im Herzen trug,
Nicht um Erwied'rung wollt ich flehen,
Dich zu lieben, war mir genug.

Ach, ich suchte stets dich zu erblicken,
Du freilich sahst mich Armen nicht,
War auch kein Hoffen mir geblieben,
So sah ich doch ihr Angesicht.

O daß mein Leid den Himmel rührte,
Daß er dich gäbe mir zurück;
Die schwere Liebeslast zu tragen,
Wär' für mich unendlich Glück.

Als du noch in meiner Nähe weiltest,
War froh mein Herz und klagte nicht.
War auch kein Hoffen mir geblieben,
So sah ich doch ihr Angesicht!

Zij was zo leuk, en zo bekoorlijk,
Zij die gekluisterd heeft mijn geest;
Maar sinds zij trok naar verre streken
Is ‘t geluk niet meer hier geweest.

Zwijgend enkel aan haar ogen hangen,
Meer wilde, ach, mijn hart toch niet.
Was dan geen hoop mij nog gebleven,
Haar ogenglans verliet mij niet.

Nooit durfde ik jou te bekennen
Dat ik je beeld in ’t hart meedroeg,
En ook geen antwoord wild’ ik vragen,
Jou te minnen was mij genoeg.

Ach, ik trachtte steeds jou aan te kijken,
Nooit werd jouw oog op mij gericht,
Was dan geen hopen mij gebleven,
Ik zag dan toch haar aangezicht.

O, mocht mijn leed de hemel roeren,
O, gaf hij jou aan mij terug;
De zware liefdeslast te dragen
Was voor mij ultiem geluk.

Toen jij nog in mijn nabijheid toefde,
Was blij mijn hart en vederlicht.
Al was geen hopen mij gebleven,
