Le papillon
Language: French (Français)
Our translations:  ENG
Gai papillon, papillon d'or
Qui t'envoles rapide et frêle,
Aubout des doigts je garde encor
Un peu de cendre de ton aile!

Tu venais voir la blonde enfant
Qui babille dans ma chambrette,
Tu venais, Monsieur le passant
Dire bonjour à ma grisette.

Ah! vraiment elle est bien ta soeur,
Comme toi légère et volage,
Elle sait endormir le coeur
Et le bercer en un mirage.

Mais papillon, dès le printemps,
Elle s'enfuira la méchante,
Laissant de tous ses grands serments
Un peu de poussiére qui chante.

The butterfly
Language: English  after the French (Français)
Cheerful butterfly, golden butterfly
Who flies away, quick and frail,
On [my] fingertips I save still
A bit of ash from your wing!

You came to see the blonde child
Who babbles in my little room,
You came, the gentleman passerby,
To say hello to my warbler.

Ah! truly she is your sister,
Like you light and flighty,
She knows [how] to lull the heart to sleep
And rock it in a mirage.

But butterfly, [at the start of] the spring,
She will flee the wicked [one],
Leaving [behind] all her great oaths [as]
A bit of dust that sings.
