Un pas léger chantait au sable de l'allée :
Dans l'attente j'ouvris la porte de mon cœur,
Mais la frêle chanson, soudain s'en est allée ...
Et je n'entends plus rien qu'un silence moqueur !

Un rire éblouissant sonnait sous ma fenêtre:
Je penchais, frissonnant, mon âme vers le bruit,
Pour voir dans le soir morne un spectre disparaître.
Et je ne vois plus rien que l'ombre et la nuit !

Une main effleura mon front lourd de sa peine.
Vers elle je portais ma lèvre et mon désir.
Mais mon geste fut vain, mon espérance vaine …
Et mes bras étendus ne peuvent rien saisir !
