by Joseph Christian Freiherr von Zedlitz (1796 - 1869)

Spätes Erkennen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ach, wär' ich fern geblieben!
Vom Sehen kommt das Lieben,
Vom Lieben kommt der Schmerz:
Mit ihm rastloses Sehnen,
Mit ihm unzähl'ge Thränen,
In Thränen bricht das Herz!
Das Herz, gebrochen eben,
Kann fürder nicht mehr leben,
Muss sterbend bald vergehen.
Bringt Liebe solche Noth,
Und kommt die Lieb' vom Sehen,
So bringt das Sehen Tod!
Ach wär' ich fern geblieben
Vom Sehen und vom Lieben! --

Confirmed with Gedichte von J.Ch. Freiherrn von Zedlitz, Stuttgart. J.G. Cotta’scher Verlag, 1859, page 140. Note: modern German spelling would change "Thränen" to "Tränen" and "Noth" to "Not".
