Il va tout seul, indolemment,
Le mendiant, sur la grand' route,
En proie à l'éternel tourment
Qu'il dit à tous, que nul n'écoute.

Ses cheveux, qui sont longs et blancs,
Auréolent son blanc visage,
Il va sous les regards tremblants
De l'enfant qui ne fut passage.

Que pense-t-il ? Nul n'en sait rien.
Sait-il aimer ? sait-il sourire ?
Est-il français ? Est-il chrétien ?
Il va tout seul, sans rien en dire !

En proie à l'éternel tourment
