Tu as tort. C'est bien vrai que, cet arbre planté,
Tu n'aurais pu jouir de son ombre bénie ...
Écoute : Comme toi, j'ai souffert dans la vie,
Comme toi, j'ai souffert, comme toi, j'ai pleuré ...

Au bord des sillons noirs
Je criai ma révolte, et la haine assassine 
Empoisonnait mon sang, siégeait ma poitrine ...
Je rejetais déjà ma bèche et mon semoir ...

C'était mon droit, pensais-je, et dans quel avenir 
Allais-je voir sombrer ma sombre destinée ?
L'enfant, mon seul enfant, gloire et bonheur d'emblée,
La guerre l'avait pris ... je l'avais vu partir.

Le temps fuit, le temps court ... 
Je travaille, j'endure, et mon espoir s'attarde 
A le croire sauvé ! ... Mais les ans me poignardent.
Je n'ose que me plaindre et le plains chaque jour ...

Et je pleurais tantôt. 
Bref, j'ai plongé ma main dans la semaille ...
Quelques ans sont passés ... Mais, regarde sa taille :
L'arbre est là, grand, branchu, campé sur le coteau !
