Es zirpte ein Grillchen im hohen Gras, 
Wir hatten es Beide vernommen. 
Ich blickte sie an und ihr Aug' war naß, 
Als hätt' es in Thränen geschwommen.  

Es tönten ein Glöcklein herauf vom Thal, 
Wir hörten's verklingen, so bange. 
Sie blickte mich an und ein Tropfen stahl 
Verräthrisch sich mir auf die Wange. 

Die Sonne verglühte im fernen West 
Und, wie uns're Blicke sich fanden, 
Da schmiegte sie sich mir an's Herz so fest: 
Wir hatten uns schweigend verstanden!
