by Josef Seiler (1823 - 1877)

Der fliegende Holländer
Language: German (Deutsch)
Von einem Schiff hab' ich gehört,
das fährt jahraus, jahrein
auf all' der weiten, wilden See,
lenkt nie zum Hafen ein.

Doch nur in dunkler Mitternacht
die Segel regen sich,
bei Tage ruht das schwarze Schiff
verborgen seltsamlich.

Der Schiffspatron und sein Gesind',
die fahren alle Nacht;
der Himmel weiß, woher sie sind,
wohin sie's treibt mit Macht.

Der Himmel weiß, wann ihre Fahrt
einmal zu Ende geht;
begegnest du dem schwarzen Schiff,
so sprich ein still Gebet.
