by Paul Duval (1855 - 1906), as Jean Lorrain

Si les petits Elfes
Language: French (Français)
Si les petits Elfes,
Qui dansent en rond,
Vous barrent la route
Et, d'un liseron
Vous frôlant la joue
Ou d'étoiles bleues
Vous ceignant le front,
Vous disent : « Jeune homme,
Viens, danse avec nous.
Viens, tu verras comme
Il est frais et doux
De fouler la mousse
Sous les chènes roux,
Faire aux petits Elfes
Trois saluts profonds,
Une révérence,
Comme au chœur en font
Les clercs et les prêtres,
Et d'un ton courtois
Dire : « Je regrette,
Mais à travers bois
Je vais à confesse
Au prochain clocher.
Demain à la messe
Je vais communier. »
Et les petits Elfes
Avec des hou, hou,
Diront : « L'imbécile,
Ce garçon est fou ! »
Mais la route est libre
Et l'espace à vous.
Sans cela dans l'herbe
Vous seriez belette,
Lézard ou hibou !

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with Jean Lorrain, L'ombre ardente. Poésies. Deuxième Mille, Paris, Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1879, pages 138-139. Note: at first glance, this poem would appear to be the third of a group titled "Contes de la Forêt", appearing as number XV of the outer group "L'ombre bleue" and with the title "Les petits Elfes", but the previous poem in the book is number XIV. There is no poem marked I or II, and the next poem in the book is number XVI of the outer group "L'ombre bleue".
