by Josef Weyl (1821 - 1895)

Der greise Sänger
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich war ein munt'rer Sängerknabe
vor siebzig Jahren schon;
was damals ich gesungen habe,
war Lerchenjubelton.

Im Dom zu Gottes Ehre schallte
mein Lied mit hellem Klang;
im frommen Herzen widerhallte
der kindliche Gesang!

Als Mann hab' mächtig ich entfaltet
der Stimme reichen Flor,
und der Diskant hat sich gestaltet
zum kräftigen Tenor!

So sind die Jahre hingeschwunden,
mir selber unbewusst,
und immer hab' im Lied gefunden
ich reinste Himmelslust.

Nun zähl' ich dreiundachtzig Jahre!
Beglückt fühl' ich mich hoch.
Wie Silber schimmern meine Haare;
gottlob, ich singe noch!

Ich trotz' der Zeit und ihrem Grimme;
o Gott, das dank' ich dir!
Nur dir zu Ehren klingt die Stimme,
die du erhalten mir.

Note (provided by Johann Winkler): Weyl, who was a close friend of the composer, dedicated this poem to the latter. The "old bard" is of course Randhartinger himself, who was a celebrated tenor in his prime and was, as the text says, 83 when the poem was made. The touching thing is that the voice range does not go beyond the two-line F, and the whole tessitura is written for a baritone rather than a tenor; so we may conclude that Randhartinger's voice had deteriorated.
