Les Deux Baisers
Language: French (Français)
Deux bons baisers je me rappelle ;

Deux bons baisers je me rappelle.
Celui de ma maîtresse est parti.
Celui de ma mère est resté.

Premier baiser de maîtresse, on en a tant !
Dernier baiser de mère, on n’en a qu’on.
Un seul bon baiser je me rappelle !

Notes provided by Laura Prichard about the song by Alexandre Georges: This song is sung by the character of La Vielle, an old lady in the Romani camp.
The poetic text in the preface to Georges’ complete score is preceded with this introduction: “Tiarko, père de Miarka, est mort. (Roman page 69) [Tiarko, Miarka's father, is dead. The old lady is burying him, and as she nails the lid on the coffin, she hums this melancholy Romani song in a low, quavering voice muffled by tears, as the hammer strikes the beat under her mechanical gesture.]
