by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874)

Landsknechtlied beim wälschen Wein
Language: German (Deutsch)
Deutsch ist meine Art und Weise,
deutsch mein Wort und mein Gesang,
hinterm Ofen, auf der Reise,
überall mein [Lebelang]1.

Übel müssen mir geschehen,
wollt' ich hier begraben sein!
Wann die Toten auferstehen,
schwatzen [alle hier]2 Latein!

Nein, ich kann kein Wälscher werden!
Stoßt nur an, es klingt gar fein.
Deutsch ist jeder Wein auf Erden,
deutsch ist auch der wälsche Wein!

Available sung texts:   ← What is this?

•   H. Zöllner

View original text (without footnotes)

Confirmed with Gedichte von Hoffmann von Fallersleben, Berlin, 1887. Notes: in Zöllner's score, the first line of the second stanza is replaced with the first line of the third stanza. Since this doesn't make much sense we have left it out of the sung text (i.e., in the footnotes below). "Wälsch" and "Wälscher" were formerly used for "Italian".

1 Zöllner: "Leben lang"
2 Zöllner: "sie allhier"

Text Authorship:

  • by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874), "Landsknechtlied beim wälschen Wein" [author's text checked 1 time against a primary source]
