by Amalia von Helvig (1776 - 1831), as Amalia, Freün von Imhoff

Glückliche Jugend
Language: German (Deutsch)
Glückliche Jugend,
haben die Schmerzen
feindlich dich noch nicht erreicht?
Laster und Tugend,
fremd deinem Herzen,
scheint dir die Wahl zwischen beiden so leicht.

Reue nicht kennst du,
Zweifeln und Irren
tief in befangener Brust!
Hoffend entbrennst du,
doch es [verwirren]1
bald in dem Busen sich Jammer und Lust.

Doch deine Leiden,
alle dein Sehnen
sind noch an Hoffnung so reich!
Götter beneiden
dir deine Tränen,
[bilden]2 sich, zärtliche Jugend, dir gleich.

Liebliche Blüten
duften und sprossen,
schön von verborgener Flamme genährt;
hat sie mit Wüten
ans Licht sich ergossen,
sind auch auf immer die Blumen verzehrt.

About the headline (FAQ)

View original text (without footnotes)

Confirmed with Deutsche Schaubühne, 11. Band, Augsburg und Leipzig s. a. The text can be found in the play Die Schwestern auf Corcyra

Note: in stanza 2, line 6, the last word ("Lust") is changed to "Schmerz" in Weber's score, which goes against the rhyme and the sense of the original, so we think it is a misprint.

1 Weber: "verirren"
2 Weber: "wandeln"

Text Authorship:

  • by Amalia von Helvig (1776 - 1831), as Amalia, Freün von Imhoff, no title, appears in Die Schwestern auf Corcyra [a play], first published 1814 [author's text checked 1 time against a primary source]
