by Theobald Kerner (1817 - 1907)

Liebesqual
Language: German (Deutsch)
Sie lehnt traurig an dem Fenster,
Schauet in die stille Nacht,
Und sie flüstert wie im Traume:
"Liebes Lieb, ach, gute Nacht!"

Er, im Kreise froher Zecher,
Fühlt sich plötzlich so allein -
Aus dem Herzen steigt die Frage:
"O mein Schatz, gedenkst du mein?"

Welche Qualen schafft die Liebe:
Sie macht traurig und allein!
Und doch möchte ohne Liebe,
Ohne Liebe Niemand sein!

Confirmed with Die Dichtungen von Theobald Kerner, Hamburg, Karl Grädener, 1879, page 66.
