Als lammren wand'len zacht en blank als room
De Meiewolken over 't hemelveld
De lucht, àl weeldelijk een vrucht die smelt
wacht vol bedwelmend hagelbloeieroom

Waar warme wadem d'aarde zwaar ontwelt
Voel ik mijn voeten loopen zomerloom
De lenteweemoed, als een droeve droom
Komt over mij met schijnbaar liefgeweld

O luwe luchten! blanke wolkenwol!
Weezoete geur van doorn en vogelkers!
Mijn jeugd van zang en vreugd'verlangen dol

Waart om alom, dat zij m'een traan ontpers!
Haar blik is blauw, haar adem zijezacht.
O Jeugd! kom tot mij in de Meienacht
