Rust

Heerlijke, donzige nacht
zinkt op mij neer; zoelig zacht
smelt in zijn adem 't laatst verlangen,
wegstervend in een laatste stille klacht.

De suizlende avondwind speelt in de zilvren snaren
der kinderkalme ziel; en op zijn brede baren
voert hij, de wijde stilte door, onmeetbre zangen.
Uw spiegelende ziel, van weemoed plots omvangen,
ziet lange trillingen statig door d' ether varen.
Gevoelens domen mat, uit tijden die eens waren.

Vertoef nog, vreemde weelde van die kalme nacht;
naar dees vergetende uur heb ik reeds lang getracht;
laat om mijn moede ziel uw eeuwge schaduw hangen.
