by Karl Gustav Dengel (d. 1852), as Siegmar Freund

Marias Nachtwache
Language: German (Deutsch)
Weine nicht, geliebtes Kind,   --
Horch! es toben Nacht und Wind:
Draußen ist finster, draußen ist kalt,
Saaten zernichtet des Regens Gewalt,
Schlossen schlagen aus Fenster.

Weine nicht!  vor jedem Leid
Schirmt dich Mutterzärtlichkeit;
Vater ist gangen weit über Feld,
Sorge fürs Kindlein zu Hause mich hält,
Sorglich wart ich des Lieblings. --

Hüllt der Schlaf dein Auge schon,
Ist dein Blick der Welt entflohn?
Wie du im Traume lächelst so mild,
Wanderten Engel vom Sternengefild
Mit dem Schläfer zu spielen?

Schlummre selig, holdes Kind!
Härst dich nicht um Nacht und Wind,
Wirst nicht durch eitles Sehnen besiegt;
Schlummre von himmlischen Träumen gewiegt,
Wunderlieblicher Engel!
