by Anvari, or Awhad ad-Din 'Ali ibn Mohammad Khavarani (1126 - 1189)
Translation by Anton Eduard Wollheim da Fonseca (1810 - 1884)

Liebeslied
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Wie kann ich wohl ertragen
Das Leben ohne dich?
Von dir entfernet, zähle
Die Tag' und Nächte ich.

Aus beiden Augen fließet
Statt Thränen Blutesstrom;
Verwüstet hat die Sehnsucht
Des treuen Herzens Dom.

Bei fröhlichen Gelagen
Trinkst du den Becher Wein,
Ich trinke Kummers Becher
Tief in mein Herz hinein.

Gewährte doch der Himmel
Als höchste Gnade mir,
Daß ich entfliehen könnte
Der Sehnsuchtsglut nach dir!
