from Volkslieder (Folksongs)

I’m going to leave old Texas now
Language: English
Choose for Diff
I’m going to leave old Texas now
They’ve got no room for the longhorn cow
They plowed and fenced my cattle range
And the people there are all so strange
Looking for the land of open skies
Nothing but the stars to be my guide
Where the dawn will find me, none can tell
But I’ll be Texas surely then, farewell
I’ll take my horse, I’ll take my rope
And strike the trail upon a lope
I’ll bid adios to the Alamo
And turn my face toward Mexico
I’ve had all the soft life I can hold
Now I’m done with doing what I’m told
I’ve got this old pony as my friend
And the lonesome prairie calls me back again
I’ll spend my days on the wide, wide range
For the people there are not so strange
The hard, hard ground will be my bed
And the saddle seat will hold my head
I’m going to leave old Texas now
They’ve got no room for the longhorn cow
They plowed and fenced my cattle range
And the people there are all so strange
