Doode liefde

Laat nu de doodsklok voor mijn Liefde luiden!
Vlecht in haar lokken leliewitte rozen,
Hecht aan haar boezem bloemen wélgekozen,
Die weelde en leven, dood en rouw beduiden.
 
Laat in haar hand den levensappel blozen,
Strooi om haar peluw koele balsemkruiden.
Geef háár den sluier en den dos der bruiden,
Hul mij in 't zwart, de kleur der vreugdeloozen.
 
Laat mij nog ééns die marmren lippen kussen!
De priesters preevlen en de kaarsen branden...
't Is me of die kus mijn ziel in tweeën kliefde.

O trouwe vriend, tracht niet mijn smart te sussen.
Leg op mijn hoofd uw zegenende handen
En laat mij weenen om mijn doode Liefde!
