Décembre à Paris

Décembre est revenu ; toujours la neige tombe,
Et, sur le ciel, la brume étend son lourd manteau ;
La mort, au son des glas, tel an vieux chemineau,
Rode, et ses doigts crochus creusent plus d'une tombe.
Le Luxembourg désert n'a plus une colombe,
On entend seulement le cri du noir corbeau,
Et la grande cité que roile un blanc rideau,
Le soir, prend un aspect dormant de catacombe.

C'est l'hiver, l'hiver triste et morne de Paris,
Si nuageux, si froid ... Quand dans le ciel tout gris
Le soleil vient sourire à travers la nuée,
Bien vite il disparait, car il a peur de voir
Ses rayons pâlissants se ternir au sol noir,
Et longtemps l'attendra la grand'ville embrumée !
