by Gottlob Friedrich Gustav von Ludwiger (1797 - 1877), as Gottlob von Deuern

Ruhe
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wenn im letzten Dämmerungsstrahle
nach dem Meer die Sonne steigt,
wenn zum dunklen Erdentale
sie den Blick voll Liebe neigt,
geht sie da erschöpft wohl zu
der stillen Ruh'?

Wenn das wildbewegte Leben
oft ersehnte Freuden log,
wenn manch Hoffen, manches Streben
schmerzlich täuschte, frech betrog,
sprich mein Herz, was suchest du?
Ach stille Ruh'!

Wenn der letzte Abend scheinet,
sanft von Todesnacht betaut,
wenn das Auge nicht mehr weinet,
sehnend nach dem Jenseits schaut,
drückt ein Gott die Augen zu
zur ew'gen Ruh!
