Lieb' im Leide
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
  Wohl blüht im Freudenstrahle
Die Liebe hold und schön,
Wie wenn mit einem Male
Stehn schimmernd alle Höhn.
  Und wer es hat erfahren,
Wie Liebe selig macht,
Muß noch in spätsten Jahren
Dran denken Tag und Nacht.

  Noch schöner doch im Leide
Magst du sie blühen sehn,
Wie funkelnd auf der Heide
Voll Thau die Röslein stehn.
  Und wer es nie erfahren,
Wie Leid auch selig macht,
Dem welkt so leicht nach Jahren
Die Lieb', ach! über Nacht.

Love in sorrow
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
To be sure, love blooms beautiful and fair
In the beam of happiness,
As if, all of a sudden,
All the heights stood radiant.
  And he who has experienced
How love makes one happy,
Must in his latest years
Yet think of if day and night.

  More beautifully yet in sorrow
You may see it blooming,
As upon the heath, full of dew,
The roses stand sparkling.
And he who has never experienced
How sorrow too can make one happy,
For him after years have passed
Love wilts, ah! so easily overnight.
