Feierabend
Language: German (Deutsch)
Feierabendruh
läuten uns im Tal die Glocken zu,
und wie schweigend sich hernieder
senkt die Nacht,
ist die süße Lust der Lieder
tief im Herzen still erwacht.

Was an Leid und Lust
wechselnd uns am Tag durchwogt die Brust,
will nicht mehr verborgen liegen,
will im Klang
reiner Töne frei sich ringen
und verklingen im Gesang.

Stund um Stunde flieht,
und wir singen fröhlich Lied um Lied,
weithin klinget unsre Weise
laut mit Macht;
klinget und verklinget leise:
Gute Nacht! Nun gute Nacht!

Text Authorship:

  • by Julius Karl Reinhold Sturm (1816 - 1896) [author's text not yet checked against a primary source]

Musical settings (art songs, Lieder, mélodies, (etc.), choral pieces, and other vocal works set to this text), listed by composer (not necessarily exhaustive):

  • by Franz Wilhelm Abt (1819 - 1885), "Feierabend", op. 390a (Vier Männerchore) no. 3, published 1871 [ men's chorus ], Magdeburg, Heinrichshofen's Verlag; the opus number 390 was used by Praeger und Meier in the same year for a set of three Lieder for soprano or tenor and piano so we have added letters to distinguish them [sung text not yet checked]
  • by Joseph (Gabriel) Rheinberger (1839 - 1901), "Feierabend", op. 170 no. 4 (1892), published 1892 [ SATB chorus a cappella ], from In Sturm und Frieden, no. 4, Hamburg, Rahter [sung text checked 1 time]
