Promenant de longs regards, autospectifs,
Les aveugles-nés s'en vont, d'un pas tardif,
Lourds, foulant les prés fleuris de la campagne.

Le pâtre parle

Ô pauvres gens, qui ne pouvez rien voir!
Le jour est un bassin d'aventurines
(Et le soleil, dardant, faisait pleuvoir
Les flots d'or pur de ses flaques divines.) 

Oiseaux et fleurs et fruits ont la beauté,
Qui tout enchante (Et se montraient la mûre,
La rose et la colombe à la clarté
Dans toute la splendeur de la nature.)

Et même quand la nuit viendra , viendra
Sur mes troupeaux, la lune est là qui veille.
Et tous les jours seront égaux pour moi,
