Élégie
Language: French (Français)
Our translations:  ENG
Quand je mourrai, enterrez
moi à la Croix des Martyrs
sans pompes et sans vains discours.
Dans l'église, célébrez
humblement mes funérailles
Cet enclos silencieux
si paisible, si pieux
et que le vaniteux raille
sera doux à mes désirs
apaisés. De neigeux jasmins
(tels d'odorants souvenirs
plutôt d'amoureuses mains)
neigeront dessus ma tombe
où nulle blanche colombe
ne se viendra poser. Pour
compagnons, j'aurai l’odeur
des bois et d'autres fleurs
ainsi que mes vieilles amours.

When I am dead
Language: English  after the French (Français)
When I am dead, bury
me at the Cross of the Martyrs
without ceremony and without vain speeches.
In the church, celebrate
my funeral humbly
This silent plot
so peaceful, so pious,
and which the vain one mocks,
will be kind to my appeased desires.
Snowy jasmines
(such fragrant memories,
[such] amorous hands)
snow upon my tomb
where no white dove
shall come to land. For
companions, I will have the scent
of the woods and of other flowers
along with my old loves.
